Totem Poles
Totem Poles by David Shankland
Over fifty years ago, at the young age of fifteen, David found his inner sculpting spirit through that of a shark swimming in the ocean waters. The shark was over five feet long with shiny scales, identifying fins ferocious saw-toothed teeth. This piece launched him into a career as a sculptor, artist, teacher, and humanitarian activist.
David’s exceptional portfolio delves deep into the heart of nature, encapsulating its diverse facets within each Totem Pole he meticulously sculpts. These pieces tell unique stories, whether it’s a single leaf dancing in the wind, a majestic eagle poised for flight, the eloquence of an orator, or the enigmatic allure of abstract shapes inviting observers on a captivating journey of exploration. With unwavering dedication, David’s artistry shines through his Totem Poles, a testament to his ingenuity and precision.
Among his most awe-inspiring creations stands ‘The Journey,’ a monumental eight-piece sculpture installation. Crafted from old-growth cedar utility poles, generously donated by a Cleveland, Ohio, utility company, this masterpiece resonates with those who have faced adversity. It tells the poignant story of individuals who have triumphed over hardships, be it immigrants seeking a fresh start, refugees escaping turmoil, survivors breaking free from cycles of addiction and violence, or front-line heroes bearing the weight of their responsibilities.
‘The Journey’ is a testament to personal growth and triumph over a painful past. Each figure within the installation represents a distinct emotional state, capturing the transformative journey of emerging from adversity and finding strength within. Through his Totem Poles, David not only pays homage to nature but also honors the resilience of the human spirit.
Every Totem Pole created by David embodies the essence of nature, an eloquent testament to his artistry and passion.
